Naming

Choosing a name for a child is one of the most challenging things in the world. After all, a name is one's identity. And although a child may decide to change their name at some point, it won't be for a while. The name you pick is what will define them during their childhood years.

Husband and I chose names for both out children well in advance of their birth. We narrowed it down to a couple of names we both like and then sat on it for a while. With this one (for sure) and probably Miss D too (I don't quite remember) I eventually started referring to the baby by one of the names in my mind. Like when he was moving around, or having the hiccups, or won't let me sleep. Instead of thinking "Settle down, baby" I would think "Settle down, So-and-So" and ultimately this is the name we go with.

I've had some friends who chose names before their babies were even conceived. And others who waited until the baby came out to see which one fit. Some people tell everyone the name the chose in advance of the birth. Others hold it a close secret.

If you have kids, how did you decide?

Stacy and I were walking on Sheridan Rd and Stacy suggested "Charles/Charlie." I liked it. We went with it.

Stacy had liked the name Amelia for some time and we had talked about it if we ever had a girl. I don't think we ever went through much of a process on her name. I thought we were going to end up calling her Mia, but that hasn't fit for me. I like calling her Millie sometimes, but mostly she's still "the baby girl."

So, you're not telling us? :)

Dan liked Eleanore (which I thought was too old sounding) and I liked Noelle (which he thought sounded too Christmas-y). One of my grandparent's sister was named Ella, which we thought was a nice compromise. Of course it was #90 in popularity by the 2001 data and is now like #20. Jonas was my Great Grandpa. Despite the Jonas Brothers, the name has not surged in popularity. However, everyone calls him Jonah (which might drive him nuts as he gets older). Lisa

Seriously, you're leaving us hanging?!

Well, Im sure all of us have been through a blank stare or disapproving nod when we say the baby name. I know that is why some people keep it to themselves. But, it doesn't matter what other people think (unless you're not even giving the kid a chance and naming him "Feather" or "Dawg", then you deserve that response) That said, we told everyone. I think, generally speaking, people are interested in hearing baby names.

For T & I it was never a process either. We have had the names picked out for years. We like the idea of family names. Torsten is named after his great grandfather who traveled here from Sweden.

I'm going with 7. It's Mickey Mantle's number. It's lucky. My kid's going to be Seven.

As Dan said, finding a name by looking at NFL rosters is a good way to go.
