What a Weekend

I hope everyone had a delightful long holiday weekend. I accomplished much and did much socializing. All without feeling rushed or harried!

Sunday we went to a BBQ with our "kid" friends. There was a manageable group of 4 kids: a 3 year old, a 1 year old and 2 2 year olds. Now that Miss D is starting to play with others I can tell she really likes being around other kids, but she is shy when not in her own environment. Some highlights were a tub of chunky sidewalk chalk, which was a big hit with all ages. There was nary a blank inch of pavement in the Kegz's backyard when all was said and done. At the playground, the 3 older kids all rode on the tire swing which was the cutest thing in the world, but of course none of us mamas had thought to bring a camera!

Monday was the main event. (eating-wise) We celebrated with our Chicago Family* at chez Jones. We once had a supper club since we all like to cook, but now we just have these occasional events. It has been a while since we went ALL OUT though, and the first time at the new condo of Mr. and M. jones.

Mr. Jones was jonesing (har har) to make fried chicken so the meal was on a southern tip. Said fried chicken was glorious, Miss D ate a whole drumstick and we split another piece together! (yes I ate too much) he also made mashed potatoes and grilled corn. Mrs. H brought her famed fresh Kale salad (a much needed "healthy" note), freshly squozen bloody mary mix (deee-licious!) and made some pan-fried okra in the Jones' lovely kitchen. I brought cornbread. Scallion buttermilk cornbread made with bacon grease in the skillet. mmm mmmm.

It's gonna take a lot of bike-ridin to work all that off.

* A group of us and 2 other couples, Mr. and Mrs. H and Mr and M Jones. All of us are transplants to Chicago with no local family members.

Sound yummy! Can you provide details on the fresh kale salad?

yes, I second that recipe request. Southern food all sounds so good until I think about the stomach repurcussions... :(

Seen in Albuquerque on sign carried by an old man.

"Will babysit for homemade fried chicken, fried okra, and cornbread cooked in bacon drippings."

Yummmmm! I looove Southern food, but I am too lazy and afraid of burns to deep fry anything. I am more inclined to ask for the cornbread recipe than the kale, tho ;)

Wow, sounds like good eats. I'll go on the side of the fence that DOES NOT want the kale salad recipe. Ugh.
