Teenagers

I was chatting with a bike center buddy this morning about her nephew. Her nephew (and godchild) did manage to graduate high school and have a party last weekend, and then proceeded to total a car that same night. The kid has issues (been to rehab, etc.) and the poor mother is at her wits end with it. (she is a single mom)

I told her that sometimes those problem kids are the ones that turn out the best in the end, and gave her my family's example.

Now that I am a parent these kinds of stories are all the more heartbreaking and scary. It is amazing that anyone makes it through their teenage years alive. I guess that's the prize- you're still alive. What is it that makes that one self-destructive kid get all those chances while another one may die trying one drug once? Just luck.

Thank god I have a while to wait for these worries...

Anytime I come across family stories like that, I think about the 250 million people in this country and the generation upon generations of children who have made it into adult life......and a lot of those kids were raised by idiots!! Seriously, idiots!! That's why I'm convinced that even I would be a good parent.....just need to find the right gal.....

As ms MR knows, I'm a great believer in fate when it comes to these things. You do your best. It's all you can do! Then there are things that are totally out of your control.

One of the hardest things to accept as a parent is that the child is an independent being and is going to make their own choices not matter what we as the parents try to do.

Hang in there. It's quite the roller coaster ride.
