Ever since we moved into our house we have spent a majority of our summers outside in our yard. We grill, we have people over, we grill some more. The first years in the house we bought some inexpensive chairs and ate holding plates in our laps. Finally last summer Husband and FIL put in a stone patio and last fall friend and bandmate T-bag started implementing a landscape design he had done for us. The first things we planted were shade plants around the patio.
This is what it looked like after the patio was put in:
Initially we had a lot of grand schemes to change the hardscape that involved demo-ing sidewalk and so forth. but ultimately we determined it would make more sense to spend less money and work with what we got. Over the past several weeks T-Bag and Husband carved out an area where we would be putting in plant beds around the perimeter of the lawn. Last Saturday they picked up the shrubs that would be anchoring in the beds (for the most part). It took 4 people and the better part of 2 hours to get the big service berry in- but it is all worth it. The yard is really starting to take shape and it makes such a difference!
Originally the plan was for the lawn area to be rounded all the way around but when it came time to do the last corner we decided that we liked the symmetry of the point of the patio playing off the point in the grass. I noticed yesterday that it is now in the shape of a heart.
Next week we should get the rest of the plants (so excited!). This is definitely calling for a BIG garden party. Maybe we can cook up some ribs like we've been wanting to try....

That looks terrific! What an inviting and cozy place spend time. Now I'm starting to regret that we chose January to visit you...
I look forward to enjoying some ribs amongst the shrubberies. Looks great!
That's almost unbelievable!! Nicely done. And I love the heart shaped grass!!
I can tell everyone from personal/on hand experience that the new back yard is muy nice!
And Pizza WAS waiting for Wife and I...how sweet is this girl.
Looks Great! But, were is the sand box for miss dukes?? Sounds like another project.
what a transformation! My outdoors is limited to public parks and watering our office plants, I admire your execution of what was obvious a lovely vision!
Very nice! I am excited to see it. Now Charlie and Miss Dukes can play "agoot" around the shrubberies.
