Came in this morning to an email stating that our workday is about to extend by an hour starting in one month.* Just one of the many signs I've gotten in the past few days that the time for me to move on is sooner rather than later and eff the life crisis- just get a new job.
Anyway- on to the post at hand. One of the benefits of joining the Fresh Picks brigade is that I often get unusual produce in my delivery that I haven't had the opportunity to work with before. In the past two deliveries I have received garlic scapes. They are the hard stem part of certain varieties of garlic and they look like this:
According to Irv and Shelley and also the internet, you can cut it in large pieces and cook and eat it like garlicky green beans or you can make a yummy pesto out of it. Guess what I did with the first batch?
I have since chopped them up and used them as I would garlic in other dishes. It is a very delicious, mild garlic flavor. If you like garlic you will probably enjoy garlic scapes. I am planning to make Miss D and I a garlicky chicken stir fry with the last of them tonight. Maybe with some swiss chard out of our garden!**
*I mean, not only does that news suck- but what a sucky way to tell your staff. typical.
** This is off topic, but our first ground cherry dropped off last night! Miss D and I split it. Very tasty! There are a lot of crunchy seeds but I sort of enjoyed the experience of eating them.

haha - I used my scapes in a zucchini pasta dish I made last night. We must be on the same wavelength!
Yup, time to move on. Are they just going to make you work more every day, and that's the end of it? (I.e. no change in pay, work structure, etc?)
Keep us informed on the ground cherry news. I'd like to know how you end up eating them.
I can relate to your job frustration.! I hope things get better for you and I hope the motherrocker crew is doing good..
You wonder why they don't carry the scapes more in the grocery store
Fresh Picks brigade? I don't think I know about that. Clearly I'm not culinary enough to join anyway.
Sorry about job stuff. No fun. A new door potentially opening up elsewhere for you though!!
