Lady the First

I've been meaning to do a post about our new first lady for quite a while. This is the first time that I have ever really identified with the First Lady, which is pretty exciting to me. And I'm sure there are many women out there who feel the same.

Of course, she is the first fashionable first lady we've had since Jackie - which was before my time. There are entire websites devoted to the subject. I love that she has a distinct personal style, that she is not afraid to take risks in her sartorial choices, that she supports up-and-coming designers and that she always looks well put together- yet approachable.

She is taller than many women, but she always comes across as graceful and elegant. She has a "real" body, with curves, solid and strong. She is lovely in a natural, effortless way. Like your friends.

But the reason I like her best and identify with her so strongly is that I feel she understands the struggles of the modern woman (because she is one) and that advocating for them is important to her. As i was growing up, the mantra told to us was always that "You can do it/have it all". A career, children, a marriage, everything. More recently, the books and message boards coming out seem to say "uh, actually you can't" or at least, not without great difficulty. Those are some giant balls to juggle and something is always being dropped. On the campaign trail, Michelle focused on work/life balance and I look forward to seeing how this theme will continue during her First Ladyship.

Of course, we don't know yet what kind of first lady she will be. I don't think she will be a Hillary charging up the hill, and she definitely won't be a Laura Bush wallflower. She will forge her own path eventually. Right now the focus is on the president and all that needs to be done. But there will be a time when it is right for her to step back in to the limelight. Right now I imagine her getting her children accustomed to their new surroundings. Making adjustments to the Whitehouse decor. Consulting with her mother, bringing in their Chicago chef and making a comfortable home for her family. Because she is a modern woman. Whose first priority is her children. Whose first priority is her husband. Whose first priority is herself. Whose first priority is the nation.

I especially love that last picture of her and Barack, with his jacket on, forehead to forehead. What a great candid shot! Lisa

Well, I'll reserve judgment on Michelle for more than a few days in the White House. So far, so good I guess. I'm not as impressed, nor should I be, with the fashion and managing her life. However, she is well spoken and that's been good to see. I'm sure SHE would have made a better President than Bush!!

Lady Bird Johnson's fashion was underrated!!!!
